Dr. Richard Zhang is currently CTO of Grid Integration Solutions (HVDC & FACTS) in GE’s Grid Solutions business since 2017. Richard has led GE’s power electronics research serving all GE industrial businesses, including GE Renewable, Healthcare, Aviation, Oil & Gas,Power, Transportation, Lighting and Industrial Systems, while at GE Global Research Center, Niskayuna, New York, from 1998-2008. Subsequently he has held a number of global technology and business leadership positions in GE Oil & Gas and GE Power Conversion during 2009-2016 based in Paris, France and Shanghai China, prior to joining GE’s Grid Solutions.
Richard has earned his Ph.D degree at Virginia Tech in 1998. He has won four Best Paper Awards for publications on IEEE Transactions, has over 41 patent families granted or pending. Richard served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, served as a Member-At-Large of IEEE Power Electronics Society, and was elevated to IEEE Fellow in 2019.
Richard served as Chairman, Board of Directors for Powerex - an US based power semiconductor and packaging company and a joint venture between GE and Mitsubishi during 2013-2017. He also serves as Chairperson on Industry Advisory Board for Center for Power Electronics Systems at Virginia Tech – an National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center in the US, since 2006.
